Vítor Alves

Vítor Alves (born September 30, 1935 in Mafra , † January 9, 2011 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese officer and politician.

After graduating from high school, Alves entered the military academy in 1954. He served initially in Portugal, then from 1958 to 1963 in Mozambique and from 1963 to 1970 in Angola .

As an opponent of the Estado Novo , he co-founded the Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA), from whose circle the overthrow of the Salazar regime was prepared. As a member of the MFA's coordination commission alongside Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho and Vasco Lourenço , he became one of the pioneers of the Carnation Revolution of April 1974.

After the coup, he headed the information policy of the Armed Forces Movement. At the beginning of October 1974, Prime Minister Gonçalves brought him into his cabinet as Minister without Portfolio. There he was responsible for information policy, social communication and defense.

Alves is buried at the Cemitério dos Olivais .
