location

Opposite the orangery in Oranienbaum, the monument is located in a square that Dessauer Strasse forms with Franzstrasse and Sollnitzer Strasse.

history

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1913, a number of monuments were erected in Anhalt . Although the country did not provide its own units in the battle, all the main parties involved ( France , Russia , Prussia ) heavily burdened it with billeting of troops and various demands, so that the Prussian-Russian victory was cause for joy, as it was the burden ended. At Oranienbaum, a few weeks before the decisive battle, the first major crossover from Saxony to the Prussian-Russian side had taken place when the König infantry battalion left the assigned outpost on September 23, 1813 .

Figure and inscriptions

Surrounded by a smaller, circular wall, a large, flat stone stands vertically. On this there is a plaque with the inscription In memory of the / German-Russian / Brotherhood of Arms / for Liberation / Germany / 1813 . The memorial does not remind of the September episode, but of the actual Battle of the Nations. The wording and the absence of an iron cross suggest that this monument was not built until later in the 20th century. Nevertheless, its basic structure largely corresponds to the usual monuments formed on boulders in the rural area of Anhalt. Since they do not name any fallen soldiers, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations is part of the border area of the war memorials .
