The Stocznia Wisła shipyard in Gdansk

The Stocznia Wisła is a Polish shipyard in the Krakowiec-Górki Zachodnie district of Gdańsk . It specializes in building small and medium tonnage ships and supplies individual ship components to Western European shipyards.

history

prehistory

The origins of the shipyard go back to 1887, when the Danzig mechanical engineering inspection was looking for a depot for its river icebreakers and found a suitable site in the west of Danzig. It is located on the right bank of the Dead Vistula , near the fork with Wisła Śmiała, about a nautical mile from the mouth of Wisła Śmiała to the Gdańsk Bay. From 1888 a winter harbor for icebreakers , tugs and other ships and repair workshops for ships of up to 300 tons was built. After the First World War, this was transferred to the Free City of Danzig , which employed 200 permanent and 50 seasonal employees there. Shortly before the end of the war in 1945, the shipyard was destroyed.

After the Second World War, the reconstruction of the shipyard began on June 14, 1945 as “shipyard number 11” under the direction of the “Association of Polish Shipyards”. From 1946 to 1950 it was run as "Państwowe Warsztaty i Stocznia" (State Workshops and Shipyard), in 1950 it was nationalized and known as "Stocznia Rzeczna w Pleniewie" ("Pleniewo River Shipyard"), which continued to only carry out repair work. In 1954, she began producing the first new buildings. Due to its location, the newbuilding capacity was limited to ships up to 300 tons, 40 meters in length and 2.35 meters in draft. It was not until January 1, 1967 that the shipyard took on the current name of Stocznia Wisła .

From 1954 to 1960 the shipyard produced over 60 minesweepers of the Soviet type D-151 - referred to in Poland as the type TR-41 - most of which were exported to the Soviet Union and seven went to the Polish Navy. River passenger ships of the type SP-150 followed in 1958, followed by coastal passenger ships such as Maryla , Grażyna and Jadwiga for the Żegluga Gdanska (Danzig shipping company). The largest passenger ship was the Halka of the type SP-1000, built in 1967 . A total of 55 passenger ships were built between 1960 and 1970 for Polish and foreign customers. There were also trawlers for export to Libya and the Soviet Union.

After 1970 the shipyard began building coasters of the type B 457 , small product tankers of the type ZB-1300 "Muran" , the single hydrofoil Zryw , pilot boats, life cruisers of the types R-12 , R-17 and R-27 (the type number stands for the length of the boat) for the sea rescue of Poland and the GDR and furthermore fishing vessels. From the 1980s, the shipyard began producing coastal passenger ships again, including catamarans for the Żegluga Gdanska and exporting to the Soviet Union for the first time. Again and again she manufactured ships for the Polish and Soviet navies.

Privatization and re-establishment in 1994

After the democratic upheaval in Eastern Europe, the shipyard was converted into a GmbH in 1992: After privatization, it began operations in 1994 as a “new” Wisla shipyard in the form of an employee company, which the company regards as the date of foundation. Since then, the shipyard has modernized its facilities, built a work surface for larger units of up to 90 meters and a gantry crane with a 45-tonne load-bearing capacity, deepened the port basin and expanded its range to include supplies for other shipyards. This includes hulls, hull sections, superstructures, RoRo ship ramps and other equipment components that are towed to customers on the shipyard's own pontoon.

In addition, it continues to produce fishing vessels, research vessels and, for the first time in 1997, a floating dock of 3000 tons for the Nigerdock shipyard in Lagos / Nigeria . In 2003, the shipyard delivered fuselage modules for the French helicopter carrier Mistral of the Mistral class of the same name to the DVN shipyard in Brest. According to the shipyard, the main buyers of the deliveries are in particular Sietas shipyard in Hamburg , shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France , Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland , VT Halmatic in Great Britain, Nordseewerke in Emden and Meyer shipyard in Papenburg . The Wisla shipyard employs 200 people.
