The Damen SAR 1906 is a type of lifeboat from the Dutch shipyard Damen Shipyards Gorinchem .

history

The boat type was developed by the Damen Shipyards shipyard in cooperation with the Dutch sea rescue service KNRM , the shipbuilding office De Vries Lentsch and the TU Delft . The development could be realized with the help of a donation from the Dutch insurance company Nh1816 Verzekeringen through their foundation "Stichting Goede Doelen" in the amount of 1.5 million euros, which was later increased. The first boat of the type was built for the KNRM. The hull was supplied by the Polish shipyard Stocznia Wisła . The christening of the boat took place on April 2, 2014 in IJmuiden , where the boat is also stationed. Godmother was Queen Máxima .

The lifeboat class, which the KNRM calls "Nh1816 class", is intended to replace the ten Arie Visser class boats that were put into service between 1999 and 2009 in the long term .

In 2014 the Nh1816 was named “Schip van het Jaar” (“Ship of the Year”) by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging van Technici op Scheepvaartgebied (KNVTS). With the award, which was first awarded in 1998, KNVTS aims to support technical innovations in the Dutch maritime industry.

In November 2016, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) ordered six boats of the type in Ankara , which should be delivered by the end of 2017. The boats financed by the European Union are built by Damen Shipyards Antalya and are to be used by the Turkish coast guard for rescue missions, especially in connection with the migration movement across the Mediterranean . The first two units were delivered in June 2017, and the other four boats followed in the course of the year.

In June 2019, nine more boats of the type were ordered for the Turkish coast guard, which are to be delivered from summer 2020.

The speed is up to 31  knots . Two generators , each with an output of 8 kW, are available for power generation. The generators are driven by the main engines. The drive of the boats is completely redundant - the main engines are in two separate departments. The engines are designed to run for 30 seconds after the boat capsizes.

The boats can cover 348  nautical miles in a row, giving an operating range of around 175 nautical miles. You have two decks. The hull is made of aluminum, the superstructure made of fiber-reinforced plastic . The bow shape is based on the " Ax Bow " developed by Damen and the TU Delft . The boats are self righting .
