The Arie Visser class is a series of ten RIB lifeboats for sea rescue from the Dutch sea rescue company KNRM ( Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij ) . RIB is the abbreviation for the English term Rigid Inflatable Boat and thus describes a rigid inflatable boat .
development
When the Johannes Frederik class was in operation , its range of approx. 150 nautical miles was not satisfactory, as only 4.5 hours of operational time were available at full power. With an extension to 18.80 meters in length, larger tanks of 6100 liters could be installed, giving a range of more than 500 nautical miles with 16 hours of full power. This enabled the radius of action to be adapted to the monitored sea area in the Netherlands, which extends around 140 nautical miles into the North Sea. With a width of 6.10 meters, the draft is 1.03 meters. In order to achieve the same top speed, the engine power had to be increased to 1000 hp each. The drive is still carried out by two Hamilton waterjets , which have no moving parts under water and therefore cannot endanger swimming people.
The proven properties as an all-weather lifeboat were retained. The inflatable rubber bead (tube) gives the lifeboat additional buoyancy and serves as a fender to walk alongside at higher speed levels and under difficult conditions in the case of a victim. The closed wheelhouse acts as a large air chamber, so that in the event of a capsize the center of gravity is above water due to the heavy engines and the tanks in the ground. This ensures self-righting , which is checked by the KNRM with every new lifeboat type.
The new boats of the Arie Visser class are driven by a crew of six , with a professional skipper as a special feature . Around 120 people can be accommodated on and in the ship. People floating in the water can easily be taken on board via a lowerable hatch in the stern. To protect the crew in the event of a fire, a 'water curtain' can be drawn up around the boat and a sprinkler system in the boat provides fire protection. Each crew member has a spring-loaded seat (saddle seat) with a safety belt to dampen the strong impacts from rough seas or grounding.
business
Between 1999 and 2009, the KNRM put ten Arie Visser class boats into operation and replaced the Johannes Frederik class boats at the North Sea stations. The ships were built by the Aluboot shipyard in Hindeloopen except for the Koning Willem I , which was built by the Habbeké shipyard in Volendam .
The first units were painted white, but from 2004 (from Anna Margaretha onwards ) there was no painting because aluminum does not need special protection. This saves the KNRM direct costs for new construction and 5-year maintenance. The crew does not have to carry out any painting work on the hull either.
As usual with the KNRM, the boats are always on standby and ready to sail in 15 minutes after an alarm. For the SAR operations, the ships are equipped with the latest devices for communication and navigation / satellite navigation such as B. Radar , NAVTEX , GPS , DGPS , AIS and depth gauges for shallow water. For your own safety, an emergency beacon (EPIRB) and a Search and Rescue Radar Transponder (SART) are on board. There is a firmly anchored tow hook in the stern for assistance, and equipment for first aid is carried along.

accident
So far, only one capsize has occurred in the operation of these lifeboats. In 2006 the " Anna Margaretha " started to help a ship with a damaged rudder. In the action area between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog there were wind forces of 9 to 12 wave heights of up to 15 meters. The boat overturned a total of three times and kept straightening up as intended. Except for a few minor injuries, the boat's crew survived the capsizing.
In other countries
Boats of the Arie Viesser class are also in service in Italy . As of 2009, the Italian coast guard received 22 boats of the 300 Ammiraglio Francese class from the Codecasa Due spa shipyard in Viareggio . The boats received more powerful MAN engines with 1100 hp for a top speed of 30 knots, which can be maintained for a range of 460 nautical miles. With a crew of 4–5 people, up to 20 people can be accommodated below deck.
