The Valentijn class is a series of 18 RIB lifeboats for sea rescue by the Dutch sea rescue company KNRM ( Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij ). RIB is the abbreviation for the English term Rigid Inflatable Boat and thus describes a rigid inflatable boat .

Size comparison Valentijn vs. Arie-Visser

The original design of the Johannes Frederik class lifeboats also provided for use as a beach lifeboat . But they have proven to be too big for this purpose and, despite the aluminum construction, too heavy. Therefore a smaller rigid inflatable boat (RIB) had to be designed for this purpose , but which should have the same sailing characteristics. The shortening to 10.60 meters in length resulted in a weight saving of five tons. With the semi-open control platform, the boats can only be described as semi-self-righting, because an airbag has to be activated to stand up after capsizing . As with the other boats, a corresponding capsize test was carried out at the KNRM in Katwijk. As with the Johannes Frederik class, the draft is 0.75 meters. The two engines produce 430 hp each and are sufficient for a speed of 34 knots . With a crew of 4, 50 people can be accommodated.

commitment

The Valentijn class boats are mainly used as beach lifeboats along the North Sea coast. The boat is stored on a special support frame with crawler tracks in a shed behind the dike near the beach. For use, a tractor on caterpillars pulls the team to the beach and into the water, from where the boat can go to sea. In contrast to the boats of the Arie Visser class , the boats of the Valentijn class are not designed for extreme operations in the North Sea and operate more near land and the Wadden Sea . They have proven their worth in the IJsselmeer , where they are preferably ready for use in a port on the jetty.

The first Valentijn class boat was stationed in Noordwijk aan Zee in 1990 . After that, ten more boats were put into operation by 1997. In 2016, the type ship Valentijn was the first boat to go out of service and was replaced by the Paul Johannes (type Valentijn 2000). The boat is now used as an exhibit in the Dorus Rijkers National Lifeboat Museum in Den Helder .

As usual at KNRM, the boats are always on standby according to the KNRM motto: Rescue people - quickly, professionally and free of charge . The crew consists of volunteers who are ready to sail in 15 minutes after being alerted. For the SAR operations, the ships are equipped with the latest devices for communication and navigation / satellite navigation such as B. Radar , NAVTEX , GPS , DGPS, AIS and depth gauges for shallow water. For your own safety, an emergency beacon (EPIRB) and a Search and Rescue Radar Transponder (SART) are on board. There is a firmly anchored tow hook in the stern for assistance, and equipment for first aid is carried along.

Valentijn 2000 class boats

Valentijn 2000 boat " Frans Hoogewind "

After the first years of experience with the Valentijn class, an improved design was created under the name Valentijn 2000 . With the extension by 40 centimeters, the further development offers a larger aft deck and more comfort for the crew in the wheelhouse. With slightly more powerful engines of 450 hp and better control, a significant increase in efficiency was achieved. From 2001 onwards, the KNRM acquired seven more boats of this type. With the last boat in 2016, the Edith Grondel replaced the first Valentijn 2000 boat De Redder , which is switching to the reserve fleet.

Valentijn in other countries

" CP 803 " Italian coast guard

The Habbeké shipyard was able to sell a Valentijn-2000 ship to the UK to Caister Lifeboat Station . Caister is in the east of England near Great Yarmouth , where a lifeboat has been stationed since 1791. The boat, named Bernard Matthews II , is used as a beach lifeboat and, like the KNRM, is used with a support frame and caterpillar tug.

Valentijn class boats are also in service in Italy . From 1994 the Italian coastguard received 13 boats of the 800 class from the shipyard Codecasa Due spa in Viareggio. Between 2001 and 2009 another 16 units followed, which can travel up to 180 nautical miles at 30 knots.
