The Atlanic class is a series of 20 smaller RIB lifeboats for sea rescue operated by the Dutch sea rescue company KNRM ( Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij ). RIB is the abbreviation for the English term Rigid Inflatable Boat and thus describes a rigid inflatable boat . The boats are intended for use near the coast or on the inland seas.
development
The boats of the Atlantic class go back to a development by students at Atlantic College in South Wales ( English South Wales ), who operate a rescue station there. The first simple rubber dinghies were inflatable rubber boats of the Zodiac type and were used as a C-class lifeboat by the British sea rescue company RNLI ( Royal National Lifeboat Institution ) for the nearer coast. The floors of the Zodiacs often showed signs of damage, after which a plywood hull with an inflatable rubber edge was designed in college - the first generation of RIB boats. The RNLI took over this design and developed from it the type Atlantic-21 with a length of 7.20 meters (21 feet) and two outboard motors . As a B-class lifeboat, this type of boat was in use for a long time with more than 100 examples.
The KNRM has always been interested in the developments and findings of its British sister organization. The increase in leisure traffic on the water and the resulting rescue operations prompted the then Zuid (KNZHRM as the predecessor of the KNRM) to acquire such boats from the RNLI and to adapt them according to their ideas. They were perfect for the coast of the Netherlands as they could easily be brought to the beach by boat carts. Alternatively, the boats are hung on davits or housed in floating boathouses. They proved themselves excellently even in operations with wind force 9 and more.
The further development of the Atlantic-21 by the RNLI led to the Atlantic-75 with a length of 7.50 meters and better properties for use at sea. Boats of this type have been acquired since the early 2000s and replace their predecessors. All Atlantic class boats are semi-self-righting , as an airbag must be activated by a crew member after capsizing . This airbag lies on the roll bar above the two outboard motors.

Atlantic class boats
The boats of the Atlantic class (Atlantic-75) are, as usual with the KNRM, in constant readiness and ready for action in 15 minutes after an alarm. For the SAR operations, the boats are equipped with the latest devices for communication and navigation . An AIS is not installed on all boats. First aid equipment is carried along for assistance. The boat is driven by a crew of three and offers space for 15 additional people.
As a rule, the boats are housed in a building near the water on a boat cart. An all-wheel-drive truck is always ready to bring the trolley to the scene. At the inland stations, the boats are protected in a floating boathouse.
