List of the sea rescue units of the KNRM
The Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM) maintains 45 stations on the Dutch North Sea coast including the Wadden Sea and the large inland waters on the IJsselmeer , Markermeer and in the Rhine-Maas Delta . With 78 lifeboats of various sizes, the KNRM is responsible for the search and rescue service (SAR) for this area on behalf of the Dutch Coast Guard . The central coordination point is the Kustwachtcentrum JRCC Den Helder , which can be reached at any time via the radio call name DEN HELDER RESCUE. The backbone for larger operations are the 34 larger units with a length of over 10 meters, which are designed as all-weather lifeboats .
Since the 1980s, the KNRM rescue fleet has consisted exclusively of rigid inflatable boats (RIB) with water jet propulsion , so that no damage to the propulsion system can occur in the event of ground contact . This drive poses no danger to people swimming in the water because there are no rotating parts in the water. The larger units have a lowerable flap in the stern which makes it easier for people to swim . All boats are self-erecting thanks to the closed driver's cab which, as an air chamber, always strives upwards. In the case of open boats, self-righting is carried out by means of an inflatable plastic bag ( airbag ) that is mounted on the radio and light mast.
The rescue stations are available 24 hours a day and are almost exclusively staffed by volunteers. Only the large boats over 19 meters in length are guided by a professional skipper .
The KNRM is a foundation based in IJmuiden. As with the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS), it is financed through private donations. The KNRM sees human rescue as the central task under the motto “Save and help people. Fast, professional and free ”.

The all-weather lifeboats of the Nh-1816-class and the Arie-Visser-class are intended for direct and fast missions in the North Sea and therefore have their home ports on the coast. The first Nh 1816 boat is the type ship for the next generation of the Arie-Visser class. Both classes are driven by a crew of 6 each and can accommodate up to 120 people.
The boats of the Johannes Frederik class are also all-weather lifeboats, but because of their short range they were relocated to the Wadden Sea and the IJssel Sea after the Arie Visser class appeared. These boats are driven by a crew of four and can accommodate 75 people.

Beach lifeboats
The fleet is complemented by the beach lifeboats of the Valentijn class , which are a smaller version of the Johannes Frederik class. These boats are protected at the stations of the North Sea in a KNRM land station (position: L) loaded on a support frame that has to be brought into the water over the beach with a caterpillar . However, some boats are permanently moored at a jetty near a KNRM station (position: S). The boats can accommodate 50 people with a crew of four.
The Valentijn 2000 class is the 40 cm extended further development and optimized version of the Valentijn class.

Inland water lifeboats
Atlantic class berths |
For rescue and assistance in the parts of the sea separated from the North Sea, such as the IJsselmeer and in the Rhine-Maas Delta , the KNRM needs smaller and lighter lifeboats that do not require a closed structure. Because of the large number of ferries in these areas, emphasis was placed on the largest possible number of people. For safety reasons and for good maneuverability, these boats should also have a water jet propulsion system. The Nikolaas class boats are mostly housed in floating boathouses. From 2013 a second series of the Nikolaas class was procured, which were built in the Netherlands.

Another class of the KNRM are the boats of the Atlantic class . These inflatable boats, which have been procured by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) since 1971 , complement the equipment of stations with larger boats. Some of them are also used on the North Sea coast as beach lifeboats in Petten , Callantsoog , Nes (Ameland) and De Koog (Texel).
