The nickname of the JRCC Den Helder is DEN HELDER RESCUE. All emergency calls from vessels in the Dutch area of the North Sea, including the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer, are answered here in order to initiate the necessary emergency measures in an emergency. The permanent monitoring of the distress radio within the framework of the GMDSS ensures the recording of all emergency calls in the monitored area. Thanks to the Automatic Identification System (AIS), the positions of all ships in the monitored sea area are known, so that a quick decision can be made as to the fastest and best way to provide help.

The service of the maritime emergency radio surveillance has been carried out by the old Rijkskuststation Scheveningen Radio in IJmuiden since 1904 . After the founding of the Nederlandse Kustwacht in 1987, the Kustwachtcentrum was also housed there in IJmuiden. After the coast guard was assigned to the Ministry of Defense, the JRCC also moved the radio station to Den Helder on the naval base of the Dutch Navy . Scheveningen Radio was switched off on December 31, 1998.

SAR missions

Sea rescue of the KNRM

Two Dornier Do 228-212 aircraft operated by the Air Force can be requested for search missions over the North Sea . For rescue missions from the air, the Marine Squadron 860 is alerted at De Kooy airfield near Den Helder. Since the NH-90 helicopters of the naval aviation will not be available for SAR missions until 2020, two Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters from a private operator in De Kooy have to be used.

The Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM) is deployed with its distress fleet for emergency operations. In addition, all ships of the Dutch coast guard are available for relief measures.
