The Nikolaas class is a series of open RIB lifeboats for sea rescue operated by the Dutch sea rescue company KNRM ( Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij ) . RIB is the abbreviation for the English term Rigid Inflatable Boat and thus describes a rigid inflatable boat .
development
In 2008, the KNRM decided to introduce a new lifeboat class for use on large inland waters such as the IJsselmeer or the Rhine-Maas Delta . The requirements were formulated based on experience with the 9-meter lifeboat " Johanna Margareta ", a unique Harder class item in the KNRM fleet, which is stationed in Den Oever . Since there are many ferries and water taxis on the inland waterways , the new boats should accommodate a larger number of people than the Atlantic class boats previously used . In addition to the crew, there should be space for 20 people. In addition to a high speed of 35 knots , a high towing power was required, since many assistance consists of the free and towing of boats. Because of the good maneuverability and for safety when taking in swimming people, a water jet drive should be used as with the large boats . There is a small platform in the stern to accommodate people from the water. Thanks to the all-round fender system, it is safe to walk alongside in the event of an accident.
Nikolaas I class boats
The first nine lifeboats were built by Mare Safety AS from Ulsteinvik in Norway as the Nikolaas I class . The boats of the type AV 900 had already proven themselves in large numbers and were adapted in various points to the requirements of the KNRM. For example, a fourth seat and a second radio, radar and navigation device were installed. As engine a Volvo D6 is used in combination with a Ultra 377- Waterjet used. Overall, a Nikolaas boat is cheaper than an Atlantic boat and requires less maintenance. The boat with an aluminum hull is usually manned by four people. At the stern of the Nikolaas-I-Boats there is a bracket with the installations for navigation and communication. As usual with the KNRM, the boats are always on standby and ready to sail in 15 minutes after an alarm.

Nikolaas II class boats
The Nikolaas II boats were manufactured in the Netherlands at the Habbecké shipyard in Volendam . The biggest difference to the Nikolaas I type is the more stable hull with a thicker bottom and twice the number of frames . In addition, the bracket for the antennas has been moved to the center in front of the steering position. An air bag is attached to the engine cover in front of this bracket, which inflates automatically when it comes into contact with water. This ensures self-righting after capsizing . In 2018 a new boat was put into service in Tholen in Zeeland for securing in the Scheldt-Rhine Canal .

The open lifeboats on the large inland waters are sheltered in floating boathouses with roller doors. The current boathouses are 20 meters long and 6 meters wide and offer space for a crew room, a workshop and a drying room for the survival suits. A boat lift allows the boat to be stored out of the water to prevent corrosion and pollution.
