history

The rescue at sea along the Baltic Sea coast of the GDR was carried out by various government agencies. From 1953 to 1960, the Stralsund waterway authority took over this service on behalf of the German Red Cross of the GDR . Between 1960 and 1963, the port authority at the Rostock District Council headed these activities. From 1964, the GDR Maritime Office was finally responsible for this and handed over its task to the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked On October 3, 1990 .

In many cases, the earlier stations of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People were continued. There were rescue stations in Timmendorf / Poel, Kühlungsborn , Warnemünde , Wustrow , Darßer Ort , Prerow , Zingst , Barhöft , Vitte ( Hiddensee ), Saßnitz , on the Greifswalder Oie , the island of Ruden and in Zinnowitz .

Row lifeboats were used until the mid-1950s . In 1953 four lifeboats were built, these were 18 meters long, about 5 meters wide and up to 10 knots fast. In the following years, more lifeboats were put into operation. In 1974 and 1975, two sea rescue cruisers of the R-17 type, almost 21 meters in length, built by the Gdańsk Wisła shipyard were purchased. In addition, open motor lifeboats were also in use until 1981. In addition, three amphibious vehicles built in the Soviet Union were used from around 1970 to 1980, as well as rubber dinghies for sea rescue. In 1990 rigid inflatable boats were used for the first time.
