In 1849 the first Tonkünstler meeting took place in Leipzig. Another important basis for a whole Germany-wide Tonkünstlerverein was the establishment of the General German Music Society in 1861 , among others by Franz Brendel and Franz Liszt ; The latter was made an honorary member of the BTV in 1871.

In 1861 the first Tonkünstler Festival took place in Weimar.

In 1874 four now existing Tonkünstlervereine in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich merged to form the Association of German Tonkünstlervereine; In 1903 the Central Association of German Sound Artists and Music Teachers was founded. In 1922, the Reich Association of German Tonkünstler und Musiklehrer (RDTM) was founded with ten regional associations, which was dissolved in 1933 as part of the “Gleichschaltung” and transferred to the Reich Chamber of Music .

In 1946 the Association of German Tonkünstler und Musiklehrer (VDTM) was founded again, which in 1964 was renamed VDMK (Association of German Music Educators and Performing Artists) and has been known as DTKV since 1993.
