The VR series Sm3 is a Finnish high-speed train . The train is based on the FS ETR 460 from Fiat Ferroviaria and has been specially adapted to the needs of the Finnish state railway VR and the climate in Finland.

history

The first two units were manufactured by Rautaruukki - Transtech (part of the Czech concern Škoda Transportation since 2015 ). VR opted for a multiple unit in order to keep the axle loads as low as possible. The tilting technology also makes it possible to drive through curves at a speed that is up to 35% higher. As with the Italian Pendolinos, it is carried out hydraulically, with a tilt angle of 8 °. The trains are suitable for use in the temperature range from - 40 ° C to + 35 ° C and consist of two end cars, two powered intermediate cars behind the two power cars and two non-powered intermediate cars. The production vehicles have 309 seats, 24 of them in the restaurant.

The first of two prototypes was put into operation as the Pendolino S220 at the end of 1995, on the basis of which a decision was to be made about the procurement of 23 multiple units of this type. Use of the two prototypes began on November 27, 1995 between Helsinki and Turku . In 1997, the first eight series multiple units were ordered, and delivery began in November 2000. On March 26, 2002, VR ordered eight additional units at a unit price of EUR 18.5 million. An option for an additional seven units was no longer redeemed. Today the trains listed as "S" in the timetable also run from Helsinki via Tampere to Oulu , via Jyväskylä to Kuopio and via Kouvola to Kajaani and Joensuu .

In normal operation, the maximum speed is 200 km / h. This speed is only driven between Helsinki and Tampere. On the route to Turku, the maximum speed is 180 km / h (although some 200 km / h are allowed), on the other lines 160 km / h. Since September 3, 2006, the Sm3 has been able to increase its maximum speed of 220 km / h on the 74 km long Kerava – Lahti line .
