The Sr1 series is the oldest Finnish electric locomotive . In 1973 the then Finnish state railway VR-Yhtymä ordered 110 machines of the Sr1 series from the Soviet electric locomotive factory Novocherkassk . The electrical equipment came from the Finnish company Oy Strömberg AB (now ABB ).
history
The first locomotive (no. 3001) arrived in Finland on September 4, 1973, the last (no. 3110) in 1984. In 1993, Hyvinkään Konepaja built locomotive no. 3111 from existing spare parts. Two years later, Hyvinkään Konepaja also built the prototype No. 3000 manufactured in Novocherkassk, ready for operation. The machine was given the number 3112 and was also classified by VR. Because of their origin, the 112 locomotives of this series are nicknamed Siperian Susi (German: Wolf von Sibirien ). The name doesn't quite fit, however, because Novocherkassk is not in Siberia , but in southern Russia .
On December 31, 2001, 110 machines were still in use. The Sr1 3048 left the fleet after an accident at Jokela on April 21, 1996, the Sr1 3089 followed on March 6, 1998 after an accident at Jyväskylä .
The top speed of the Sr1 was initially 140 km / h, but was increased to 160 km / h from locomotive with the number 3098. As early as the 1980s, the maximum speed of the locomotives No. 3040 and 3041 was increased to 160 km / h for testing purposes. From 2003, the top speed was reduced again to 140 km / h, as the changed gear ratio meant losses in traction. In July 2006, only the locomotive No. 3107 was permitted for 160 km / h.
After initial teething problems, continuous improvements flowed into production, which made the Sr1 an extremely reliable locomotive. With 110 units, it is the largest electric locomotive series in Finland and forms the backbone of electric train transport.
