The VT5 ( Type 15 or ZTQ-15 ) is a light Chinese tank .

First pictures of the new tank were published back in 2010. The entire development program was kept secret and there were no official Chinese statements about the tank. According to the manufacturer Norinco , it was developed exclusively for export and presented to the public for the first time in 2016. The name VT5 is an export identifier.

technology

The VT5 has a welded armored hull and turret, supposedly made from a steel alloy. In addition, it has either passive composite armor or reactive armor. Some areas of the tank are also provided with cage armor , which offers protection from anti-tank missiles . NBC protection and automatic fire extinguishing systems are included as standard. The tank weighs 33–36 t, depending on the additional armor, of which different versions have been observed. Chinese sources also state that the chariot can be equipped with an APS system .

The main armament consists of a fully stabilized 105 mm cannon with an effective range of 3 km, the ammunition of which is compatible with all common types of 105 mm tank ammunition used by NATO . The cannon has an automatic ammunition loading system, which allowed the crew to be reduced to three men. The driver sits in the middle of the fuselage, the commander and gunner sit in the turret. With APFSDS -ammo can be penetrated up to 500 mm rolled homogeneous armor. The VT5 is also capable of firing 105mm anti-tank missiles through the barrel. These extend the effective range up to 5 km and hit stationary targets with a hit probability of over 90%. In addition, the missiles have tandem HEAT warheads, which pose a serious threat to main battle tanks and can even target low-flying helicopters . There are also common HEAT and HE ammunition for use against light armored vehicles, buildings and field fortifications. A total of 38 rounds and missiles are held for the main cannon in the tank. Used bullet cases are automatically ejected via a flap on the back. A remote-controlled weapon station with a 12.7 mm machine gun and a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher is available as secondary armament . A 7.62mm coaxial machine gun is also provided.

The tank is powered by a turbo-charged FX0012 diesel engine with 1000 hp in the rear, which is connected to a fully automatic transmission. The VT5 is an agile vehicle with steel chains and rubber buffers. The maximum range is 450 km, but can be increased to around 650 km by adding external fuel tanks.
