Vagrant Story ( Japaneseベ イ グ ラ ン ト ス ト ー リ ーBeiguranto Sutōrī ) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square and at the same time a dungeon crawler . The title was released in Europe on June 21, 2000 for the Sony PlayStation .

Vagrant Story revolves around the risk breaker Ashley Lionet, who was sent to shadow the fanatical Mellenkamp cultists who occupy Prince Bardorba's estate. Shortly after that incident, Sydney Lasstarot, the leader of the ominous sect, disappeared and the prince was found dead. Ashley Lionet is one of the suspects in this murder case. The player takes control of Ashley in this fateful week and guides him through the dusty ruins of LeMonde.
The graphic style is usually quite dark and kept in dark colors. This underlines the mystical touch of the game, which is characteristic of the specific atmosphere of the game. The soundscape, which consists mostly of natural sounds, for example rushing water or the singing of birds, also has a supportive effect. Pre-rendered film sequences can only be seen in the opening credits, but the in-game graphics were partly designed with the help of very elaborate photo textures. The type of "storytelling" and the complex combat system make Vagrant Story unique; it is difficult to put into one category.
Gameplay
In Vagrant Story you fight your way room by room through catacombs shown in isometric perspective. The combo-oriented fights take place in real time. However, the game can be paused at any time, for example to change equipment or cast spells. A large part of the game time is spent creating, improving and modifying various weapons, where there are almost endless possible combinations. The level of difficulty is relatively high and emphasizes the importance of constant weapon improvements and modifications.

Vagrant Story has generally been received very positively. The MAN! AC forgave 89% in the original issue. In Famitsu , it was the third and only game on PlayStation that received the highest rating of 40 points.
