Valérand Poullain (also: Valerandus Polanus or Valerandus Pollanus ; * around 1520 in Lille ; † beginning of 1558 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Reformed clergyman during the Reformation .

life and work

Poullain studied at the University of Leuven , where he earned a master's degree. In 1540 he was ordained a priest. In 1543 he came to Strasbourg as a Reformed preacher , and in 1547 to Glastonbury . During the Catholic Restoration under Queen Maria I , he had to leave England at the end of 1553. Via Antwerp , he and 24 Walloon refugee families reached Frankfurt am Main in early 1554 , where he became their spokesman. On March 16, 1554, he petitioned the city council for admission, which decided on March 18, on the intercession of the patrician Johann von Glauburg : Inen wilfaren and Sy should be accepted in the name of gots . This day marks the founding date of the French Reformed congregation in Frankfurt.

Poullain drafted a parish order, which was recognized and printed by the council as the holder of the church regiment. On May 8, 1554, the council made the White Frauenkirche, which had been vacant for 12 years, available to the French refugees for their services.

Poullain was considered a sharp-tongued polemicist who soon came into conflict with the city's Lutheran preachers, especially Hartmann Beyer , on questions of the liturgy and confession , especially the doctrine of the Lord's Supper . As a result, he also lost support in parts of his community. Poullain was brought before an arbitration tribunal in September 1556, which was headed by his friend John Calvin in the house of the patrician Claus Bromm . The attempt to settle the dispute remained unsuccessful.

On October 20, 1556, Poullain gave up his ministry, but continued to stay in Frankfurt. With numerous theological pamphlets, including the Antidotus in May 1557 , and translations, he continued to intervene in the confessional controversy between the predominant Lutherans and the Reformed immigrants. His exact date of death is unknown.
