Valentin Erythraeus

Valentin Erythräus (* 1521 in Lindau ; † March 29, 1576 in Altdorf ) was a German educator and philologist .

Life

Valentin Erythräus received his school education at the Latin School in Lindau and then studied for three years at the University of Strasbourg and then at the University of Wittenberg , where he heard lectures from Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon and earned their special trust.

His former teacher, the humanist Johannes Sturm , called him to the University of Strasbourg; Valentin Erythräus was promoted to professor of rhetoric and taught for the following 29 years.

After the grammar school was moved from Nuremberg to Altdorf, Valentin Erythräus was appointed rector of the newly built grammar school. Although he died only nine months later, in this short time he was able to play a key role in ensuring that teaching in Altdorf was organized according to a uniform didactic concept.

Valentin Erythräus was married, his son was the church musician Gotthart Erythräus (around 1560-1617).

Writing

During his time in Strasbourg, his publications were mainly about philological topics and didactic aids for the textbooks by Philipp Melanchthon and Johann Sturm, in which he tried to illustrate the contents of the teaching works with examples or with diagrammatic tables.
