Valentin Schertle (born January 31, 1809 in Villingen ; † February 24, 1885 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German painter, lithographer and draftsman.

After his apprenticeship at the Herderschen Kunstanstalt in Freiburg im Breisgau under the direction of the engraver Karl Barth , Schertle studied from May 3, 1831 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . In Munich he also became a pupil and assistant to the lithographer, later court photographer and entrepreneur Franz Hanfstaengl .

After visiting Crimea, Odessa and Riga, he spent several years in St. Petersburg and Warsaw . During this period he created numerous portraits in the form of lithographs, pencil and chalk drawings and watercolors. He also made lithographic copies of works by famous painters such as Raffael , Guido Reni and Paul Delaroche, among others, from the collections of the St. Petersburg Hermitage . The lithographic copy of the portrait of Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna , a work by the Scottish painter Christina Robertson (1796–1854), opened his entrance to the imperial court. He also worked as a portraitist for the Polish nobility in Warsaw.

In 1845 Schertle returned to Germany. After a stay in Berlin, he settled in Frankfurt am Main . His lithographs were published by various publishing houses.
