Daniel (Daan) van Golden (born February 4, 1936 in Rotterdam , Netherlands ; † January 9, 2017 in Schiedam ) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist .

life and work

After attending a technical school, Daan van Golden studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences, specialized in painting and took lessons in graphic techniques. He also worked as a window designer for De Bijenkorf , a chain of exclusive department stores. He stayed in Japan from 1963 to 1965 and continued to travel extensively, with long stays in Morocco , India , Indonesia, and North and South America. His travels found their expression in his artistic work.

Van Golden's early works were of an abstract-expressionist character. In 1963, while in Japan, he made a radical stylistic change, creating a series of meticulous, very detailed depictions of textile and paper patterns. The artistic use of industrial and commercial products revealed the influence of Pop Art during this period. He also used motifs by Jackson Pollock , from which he enlarged details.

In 1968 van Golden was invited to the 4th documenta in Kassel , where he combined existing and new images into an installation. He repeated this concept at subsequent exhibitions. Two large solo exhibitions of Daan van Golden's work were held, one in 1982 in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum (Daan van Golden 1963–1982) , the other in 1991 in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (Daan van Golden - Werken-Works 1962–1991) . Van Golden was one of the artists in the Dutch pavilion at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 and a participant in the 7th Biennale d'art contemporain de Lyon in 2003.
