Vanha ( Finnish old ) is a funeral doom , death doom and gothic metal band founded in 2016 .

history

Jan “Janne” Johansson founded the Vanha project in the summer of 2016. After recording two demo pieces, the drummer Jesse Oinas joined the project in the same year. Johansson provided all of the remaining instrumentation and vocals for the debut. Johannson recorded the second album alone after Oinas had left Vanha due to "other priorities". The debut Within the Mist of Sorrow was released in 2016 via Black Lion Records . The second studio album Melancholia was released two years later on the same label.

Within the Mist of Sorrow and Melancholia were largely positively received by the international press. Melancholia was meanwhile even given top marks by the webzines Metalunderground.at and XXL Rock . In an interview conducted for the release of the album Melancholia , Johansson expressed the desire to develop Vanha into a band and to perform, but explained that no stable band constellation had arisen up to this point.

style

Vanha's music is classified as Funeral Doom, Death Doom and Gothic Metal. For the Doom-Metal.com website, the game form presented by the group is described as a “melancholy” and “atmospheric” as well as a “creepy” variant of the genre. As a comparison, reference is made to a mixture of a “nebulous, natural mood” that corresponds to that of Agalloch and the “orchestral and growling / whispering / spoken gloom” of Saturnus .

In reviews, the music is also described as corresponding to the "high phase" of Gothic Metal. In reviews, comparisons with Mourning Beloveth , My Dying Bride , The Sins of Thy Beloved , Paradise Lost , Tiamat and similar representatives are sought after. To distinguish it from the changed perception of the genre, a discussion of the debut describes the music as Gothic Metal from "times in which the genre was still something to be taken seriously and was not softened by elven rock, kohl and plastic sound" and a parallel to the representatives of the Labels Peaceville Records (My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost) pulled.

The music is based on corresponding models and is "downright classic" in the genre. “Heavy but epic guitar walls transport guttural-deep growls , while subtle piano sounds , synths and a sad violin provide emotional overtones. […] Occasionally used clear vocals […] or spoken vocals ”complement the sound.
