Adventure on the Lego Island ( own notation : Adventure on the LEGO Island ; English title: Lego Iceland ) is a Lego - computer game , which by Mindscape developed and 1997 for Windows was released. It is the second Lego video game after Lego Fun to Build and thus the first Lego computer game ever to be published outside of Japan . Adventure on Lego Island has been approved by the USK as a so-called edutainment product without age restriction. In 2004 PEGI provided a re-release of the game by Disky Communications Europe BV with the recommendation from 3 years.

Gameplay

Lego Island Adventure is a 3D game played in first person view . The eponymous Lego island can be freely traveled, similar to an open world . The player has the choice between several playable characters, with which different missions can be completed at different points in the game world . Central elements of the missions are the assembly and use of Lego vehicles. When assembling, the player has to pull the specified clamping blocks to the intended places and has little influence on the future appearance of the vehicle by choosing the color and printing. There are two racing game missions: jet ski racing on a marine area marked out by buoys and car racing on a racetrack . The missions can be played in any order.

Missions

The game contains the following missions, some of which depend on the chosen character:

  • Car racing: assemble racing cars and race
  • Jet ski race: assemble jet ski and race
  • Pizza delivery: bring pizzas to different locations on Lego Island
  • Breakdown : Vehicles used for workshop tow
  • Ambulance : Injured to the hospital bring

action

Due to its non-linear gameplay, the game only has a limited story. However, the background story of the Lego island emerges from the comic included as a game manual . There is also a special story mission in the game that starts when you accept the pizza delivery mission with the character Pepper Roni . In the course of this mission, the stone crusher escaping from prison must be recaptured.

Playable characters

There are five playable characters to choose from:

  • Pepper Roni : Pizza delivery boy
  • Papa Brickolini : Pepper's foster father and pizzeria owner
  • Mama Brickolini : Pepper's foster mother and cook
  • Laura Brick : Policewoman
  • Nick Brick : brother of Laura Brick, police officer

Other characters (selection)

  • Infomaniac : Creator of the Lego Island
  • Steinbrecher (in the English original Brickster ): Antagonist who wants to destroy the island
  • Ingo Nöhr (in the English original Bill Ding ): Engineer who gives tips on assembly
  • Dr. Clickitt : chief physician of the hospital

development

In 1996, the Lego Group invested nearly 2 million US dollars in the development of computer games. The game was announced in January 1996 under the title Lego Town and should be based on the Lego system theme Town . A year later, the name change to Adventures on Lego Island was announced. In September 1997, the release on the 26th of the month was finally announced under the final English title Lego Island . The German title was left with Adventure on Lego Island .

For the design of the game world, a model of the Lego island was built from real Lego bricks in the premises of the Mindscape developer studio.

Sales figures

By 1999, the game had sold more than 909,000 copies in the United States .

Awards

In 1998, the game received an award at the Interactive Achievement Awards of the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences in the category Best PC Game for families / children .

successor

In 2001 the successor Lego Island 2: The Stone Breaker Returns (original title: Lego Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge ) was published for Windows , PlayStation , Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance . In the game developed by Silicon Dreams you play the main character Pepper Roni again and have to hunt and catch the stone crusher again . The second part has a more linear narrative style, whereby a lot of emphasis is still placed on free exploration of the game worlds. It also includes platformers Run elements.

In the following year, the game Island Xtreme Stunts appeared , which also revolves around the Lego island , Pepper Roni and the stone crusher and can therefore be seen as the third part of the series. Various Lego sets were also released for this purpose.
