Vanquish is a third-person shooter with a science fiction scenario from the Japanese developer studio Platinum Games and was released for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 by publisher Sega . It was first released in North America on October 19, 2010 after three years of development. The action game had sold 820,000 times by early 2011. On May 25, 2017, a technically revised PC version of Vanquish will be released as a downloadable title from Steam . The new edition supports 4K resolution and modern graphics options.

action

Towards the end of the 21st century, rapid population growth will cause the number of people on earth to rise to over ten billion. Due to a lack of food and energy to supply, numerous wars arise over the dwindling natural resources. The US launches the SC-01 Providence space station. Equipped with a solar generator, this should get the US's energy problems under control.

The Order of the Russian Star - a faction of the Russian military that had come to power in their homeland through a coup d'état - responded with a surprise attack on the colony. The Order converted the colony's microwave energy field into a giant weapon and turned the destructive force against the residents of the city of San Francisco. Following this declaration of war on a weapon of mass destruction, the Order demanded the unconditional surrender of the United States within ten hours, threatening to bring New York City to rubble.

The president refused to cooperate with the aggressors and is forced to order a military attack to wipe out the invaders and retake the colony. This attack is said to be under the direction of Lt. Col. Robert Burns.

The DARPA agent Sam Gideon will also take part in the mission with an advanced weapon prototype (ARS combat suit).

Game flow

The player takes on the role of the DARPA agent Sam Gideon, who is equipped with an ARS combat suit. This suit gives the player the opportunity to slow down the game time ( bullet time ), as well as to accelerate himself, which enables the player to attack and withdraw quickly.

Sam Gideon is also equipped with a BLADE weapon system, which enables the player to save three of a total of eight weapon types. These can then be changed depending on the game situation. In addition, Sam Gideon has two types of grenades at his disposal, hand grenades and EMP grenades, with the latter stunned the enemy for a short time. The weapons can be upgraded as the game progresses by collecting special boxes or weapons of the same type, which improves accuracy, ammunition supply and the explosion radius.

The player can also control turrets and vehicles and distract the enemy with cigarettes. During intermediate and final fights, the game is also interrupted by sequences, so-called quick-time events , in which the player has to react quickly to avert danger.

reception

Vanquish has received very good reviews and awards worldwide. Metacritic shows 84 out of 100 possible points.

4Players awarded 88 out of 100 points and its Gold Award. They particularly praised the style and presentation of the game, but complained about the lack of multiplayer and the short playing time.

The Guardian also praised the style and the boss fights but also criticized the lack of multiplayer.

Sega was disappointed with the sales figures, aiming for a million copies sold.

Others

Shinji Mikami had even crazier ideas in mind for Vanquish than were ultimately implemented: Sam was to be accompanied by a robot dog, which was to merge with his combat suit to create new forms. However, even Mikami's colleagues at Platinum Games went too far. The idea of the robot dog was taken up again in Platinum's action game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance .
