Varnavas ( Greek Βαρνάβας ( m. Sg. )) Is a small town with 1308 inhabitants (2011) and a municipality of the municipality of Marathon in the Greek region of Attica with around 2500 inhabitants. From 1912 until it was incorporated into Marathon, it was an independent rural community in the prefecture district of Ostattika .

Varnavas is located about 35 km northwest of downtown Athens on the southern Gulf of Evia . The center is around 450 meters above sea level, 12 km from the Aegean coast, in which Varnavas is part of a seven-kilometer section. To the west, Varnavas borders the municipality of Oropos , to the east, the municipal districts of Marathon and Grammatiko .

More details about the ancient settlement of the area are not known, the ancient place Semachidai was assumed to be in the municipality , for which there is no evidence. According to legend, the place should be named after Saint Barnabas , who proselytized here; more likely, however, is the theory that it got its name from a wealthy landowner here.

Originally the village was inhabited by Arvanites , who initially ran cattle here. Agriculture and horticulture developed later, especially viticulture . Due to the location of the place close to the most densely populated area of Greece, the inhabitants were also active as workers in factories or in the construction industry in the 20th century, in the last few decades the city has been booming with the influx of residents from the Athens area. The Albanian element has almost disappeared, livestock farming and farming professions are falling sharply in favor of activities in the service sector. Due to its beach with its high water quality, Varnavas is also an important holiday and local recreation area for the Athens metropolitan area.

In Varnavas there are some sights, such as the ruins of a tower from the 5th century BC and a tower from Byzantine times, the Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios and Agia Paraskevi and the wooden iconostasis in the main church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul .

The regular celebrations of the community include the festival of Peter and Paul on June 29th and various annual summer cultural festivals such as "The Waves of the Sea" ( Ta Kýmata tis Thálassas , Τα Κύματα της Θάλασσας).

The place has a crèche, a kindergarten and a primary school, medical care is provided by a "health center" in the neighboring municipality of Kapandriti, where there is also a police station.
