Metropolitan Varnavas Tzortzatos

Varnavas Tzortzatos ( Greek Βαρνάβας Τζωρτζάτος ; * 1918 in Patras ; † August 19, 1985 in Thessaloniki ) was Metropolitan of the Diocese of Kitros and Katerini from 1954 to 1985 .

biography

Nikolaos, his birth name, came from Patras. He studied at the theological faculty of the University of Athens and became a lecturer there. By the second ordinance of June 12, 1940, he was called up as a military chaplain.

He translated works by English and French ecclesiastical writers into Greek and later became a lecturer at the Holy Cross Orthodox College in Brookline, Massachusetts . He received honors from some European theological colleges and he represented the Church of Greece externally. In 1950 he was appointed rector of the Theological College and the boarding school of the Apostolic Diakonie in Athens.

On May 28, 1954, he was appointed Metropolitan of the Diocese of Kitros and Katerini. In addition, he became a lecturer at the Theological School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki .

He died on August 19, 1985 in Thessaloniki.

Varnavas Library

In 1995, on the tenth anniversary of his death, a library was set up in Katerini that bears his name. The library is recognized by the state and has 8000 books and various periodicals . The director is currently (2014) the Byzantinist Archimandrite Ignatios Sotiriadis .
