history

When the Ottomans subjected the male heads of household to a census in order to record the tax units, 11 Turkish men were counted in Vasili. The number of residents was 327 in 1891, when the British colonial rulers (since 1878) carried out their first census, but now included all residents. From then on, these censuses were made every ten years, with 277 inhabitants being determined in 1901. In 1911 there were 324, by 1921 there was an increase to 336, by 1931 to 358. In 1891 there were still 22 Cypriot Turks living in the village, in 1901 there were 18, ten years later 24, in 1921 there were 28, and in 1931 it was finally 27 the census, which was made up in 1946. Now there were 421 Cypriot Greeks in the village, compared to 391 in 1960. While 50 Cypriot Turks lived in Vasili in 1946, not a single one was counted in 1960. They fled the village in 1958 and never returned. In 1973 there were 362 Cypriot Greeks living in the village.

Before 1974 Vasili was inhabited exclusively by Cypriot Greeks. In 1975 the Turks renamed the village Gelincik; In 1978 the place had 371 inhabitants again, but now only Turks. Around a third of the Greeks had been deported in August 1974, while around 260 of them stayed in the village until October 1975. By December 1976 the last Greek Cypriots left Vasili / Gelincik.

Its new inhabitants came from Turkey, especially from the provinces of Ağrı and Trabzon , Gaziantep , Erzurum , Kars and Iğdır . In 1978 there were 371 inhabitants, probably mostly Turkish, in 1996 there were 482, in 2006 452. In 2011 there were 496
