Vatican News

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vatican News has been the Vatican's multilingual news portal since December 17, 2017 and thus the successor to the previous international service, Radio Vatican . In addition to the previous radio and text offerings, it also includes other multimedia content. Since September 29, 2019, the audio contributions from Vatican News have been published again under the “Vatican Radio” brand.

history

Because of the high costs associated with running Vatican Radio, Pope Francis initiated the reform of the Vatican media in 2015, which also affected Vatican Radio. The newly established communication secretariat (today: Dicastery for Communication ) took on this task. The aim was to take into account the media change towards digital and social media and to align one's own activities accordingly in the future.

As early as the end of 2016, there was speculation that the Christmas specials might be the last ones that Vatican Radio would still produce and broadcast. Nevertheless, the transmitter was switched off and the switch to the new platform occurred “suddenly” in December 2017. The editorial staff had only found out about it from the newspaper.

On December 17, 2017, on the 81st birthday of Pope Francis, the beta version of the website was activated, which, in addition to the previous content from Vatican Radio, also includes the Vatican's multimedia and social media offers.

Offer and editing

The offer is designed in the manner of an online magazine and divided into four subject areas: The Pope ; the Holy See ; Local churches ; and the universal church.

Vatican News employs 650 people when it was founded, more than half of whom previously worked for Vatican Radio.

The editorial team initially consists of six language departments (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese). In the following, however, all of the previous 40 voice services from Vatican Radio will be integrated into the new offer. The editorial teams create all content together.

In addition to the texts on the website of the service and on the pages in the social networks, there is still a radio offer that is distributed linearly and on demand . A program in Italian can be received under the name Radio Vaticana Italia in Rome on FM and throughout Italy on DAB + . There are also video contributions and live broadcasts.

It is still unclear to what extent L'Osservatore Romano will be included in the reform.

The temporary editor-in-chief until March 21, 2018 was Dario Edoardo Viganò , Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications of the Holy See. He was supposed to select the first editor-in-chief of Vatican News, but resigned prematurely. Andrea Tornielli became editor-in-chief in December 2018 .

Since 2009, Father Bernd Hagenkord SJ has been responsible for the German-speaking department ; since 2019 Stefan von Kempis . The previous radio program continues to run, also in the other voice services and also - if left - on shortwave and satellite. The previous German-language program Treffpunkt Weltkirche will be further distributed as a podcast .

Range

The social media channels from Vatican news on Facebook , Twitter , YouTube and Instagram reached, according to the Secretariat of Communications beginning of the year 2018 a total of about four million users, of which three million subscribers accounted for on the Facebook platform.
