Vaughan [ vɔːn ] is a city in the Regional Municipality of York north of Toronto in the Province of Ontario in Canada . It is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada and has more than doubled its population since 1996 (1996: 132,549; 2011: 288,301). Vaughan is part of the Toronto metropolitan area. Their slogan is: "The city above Toronto".
history
The first European to explore Vaughan was Étienne Brûlé in 1615. However, a settlement was not established until 1792. The village was named after Benjamin Vaughan, a British commissioner who signed a peace treaty with the United States in 1783.
In 1991, the town changed its legal status to the "City of Vaughan".
economy
Vaughan is home to the Toronto Star print shop , Canada's highest-circulation newspaper, and Canada's Wonderland amusement park .
education
The York University is located on the border of Toronto to Vaughan. It is one of the largest universities in Canada with over 50,000 students.
