Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos , previously Willys Mexicana SA , was a Mexican manufacturer of automobiles .
Company history
The company Willys Mexicana SA was founded in 1946 as a car dealer in Mexico City founded. The parent company was SOMEX ( Sociedad Mexicana de Credito Industrial ). The production of automobiles began in 1950. In 1953, another assembly plant was opened near Mexico City.
When SOMEX was nationalized in 1963, the company was renamed Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos , or VAM for short , in conjunction with American Motors Corporation and Kaiser Jeep Corporation . In 1965 another plant was opened in Lerma de Villada .
In 1983 Renault took over the company. Production ended in 1989. The brand name VAM was used from 1946 to 1989 or only from 1963 to 1983, depending on the source.
vehicles
Initially, the company manufactured the Jeep under license from Willys-Overland . Later there were models from AMC and Renault. The AMC Rambler is named for 1960 . Vehicles from Datsun and Peugeot have also survived from the early 1960s .
Production numbers
At the beginning of the 1960s, around 2000 Jeeps, 1000 Ramblers and 2000 other Datsun and Peugeot vehicles were built annually. Around 10,000 Ramblers and 1,000 Jeeps have been handed down annually for the late 1970s.
