Veldschoendrager

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Veldschoendrager officially in Khoekhoegowab ǁHawoben , also German  field wearer and Afrikaans Veldskoendraers , are a clan of the Nama with settlements in Namibia .

They are headed by a Kaptein , also recognized in independent Namibia, as the leader of the ǁHawoben Traditional Authority . The office has been held by a new captain since 2011, before Hans Titus died four years earlier after 27 years in office . The current status of the Veldschoendrager is controversial. According to their own statements, they have been recognized as a separate traditional group since 1998 . According to other sources, this is not the case and therefore the appointment of a captain is illegal.

history

The Velschoendrager populated from the 1820s, especially the area around the historical, pre-colonial city ǁKhauxa!nas and called their settlement Schans Vlakte (too German about Fortress level ) Due to drought and the outbreak of rinderpest the settlement area from the 1840s to the north was moved . In 1886 Schans Vlakte, i.e. the Kora-Orap farm , was sold by the Veldschoendrager.

According to the German Colonial Lexicon , the Veldschoendrager were considered to be exterminated in 1920.
