The Velp is a river in Belgium and a tributary of the Demer .

It rises in Opvelp (sub-municipality of Bierbeek ) and flows into the Demer in Zelk (sub-municipality of Halen ). The name probably comes from the Germanic falwa (pale) and apa (water) and means something like "pale, yellowish water". The name forms felepa (741), Velpe (920) and Velpa (1284) appear in early sources .
