The Venetian Islands are a chain of artificial islands in Biscayne Bay in Florida that were built up from 1920 and belong to the communities of Miami and Miami Beach . Originally a bridge built by John S. Collins in 1913 was located in the islands area . The names of the islands are (from west to east, the associated municipality in brackets):
- Biscayne Island (Miami)
- San Marco Island (Miami)
- San Marino Island (Miami Beach)
- Di Lido Island (Miami Beach)
- Rivo Alto Island (Miami Beach)
- Belle Isle (Miami Beach)
- Flagler Monument Island (Miami Beach)
Remnants of an unfinished man-made island can be found in central Biscayne Bay between Di Lido Island and the Julia Tuttle Causeway . The island was to be named Isola di Lolando . The island's failed completion marks the end of the Florida land boom of the 1920s. The Shoreland Company went bankrupt in 1927 for opposition to "further disfigurement of the waterway" and the effects of the 1926 Great Miami Hurricane .
The islands are (with the exception of the uninhabited Flagler Monument Island) connected by bridges with each other and with the mainland of Florida and the main island of Miami Beach. The Venetian Causeway follows the bridges and islands and is a popular route for jogging, cycling and strolling. Since cars have to pay a toll, the road is much less busy than the other bridges. The islands are inhabited and form suburbs, within easy reach of South Beach and Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts .
