John S. Collins
John Stiles Collins (born December 29, 1837 in Moorestown , New Jersey , † February 11, 1928 in Miami , Florida ) was an American Quaker and farmer. He is considered one of the founders of Miami Beach .
Collins came to Miami in 1896 to inspect his stake in a coconut farm. Attempts to use the area for agriculture, however, have not been very successful.
In 1912, Collins and his son-in-law Thomas J. Pancoast had the idea of developing the hardly inhabited and mangrove-covered island of Miami Beach as a residential and leisure area. Until 1913, Miami Beach could only be reached by boat from Miami. With the help of Carl G. Fisher , Collins built a wooden bridge, in the place of which is now the Venetian Causeway ( Venetian Islands ).
In Miami Beach, Collins Avenue and the Collins Canal are named after John Collins.
With his wife Jane, John Collins had 3 sons (Arthur, Irving and Lester) and a daughter (Katherine) who were involved in his endeavors.
