biography

Vera Mercer was born in Berlin as the daughter of the set designer Franz Mertz . After training as a dancer, she married the Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri in 1958 and went to Paris with him . Here she became part of the Parisian avant-garde of the early 1960s, portraying Marcel Duchamp , Robert Filliou , Niki de Saint-Phalle and Jean Tinguely , among others . Regardless of her portraits, Mercer began to photograph the old Parisian market halls shortly before they were demolished, and for the first time addressed a subject for which she would later become known: food . Her elaborate staging of fruits, vegetables, meat and fish in opulent fruit, but also flower and animal still lifes, makes multiple references to art history . After the divorce from Spoerri, she started working for international magazines and shot reports a. a. about Samuel Beckett , Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol . She was also hired as a photographer by many artists, for example Eva Aeppli , Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint-Phalle.
