The Association of German Magazine Publishers (VDZ) is the umbrella organization for German magazine publishers. The VDZ is a registered association in Berlin. It was founded in 1949 under the chairman Gisbert Hennessen and the managing director Norbert Meyer-Ibold. Five regional associations belong to it. Around 500 publishers are organized in the VDZ, which together publish more than 6,000 magazines. Hubert Burda was President of the Association from 1997 to 2016 , and Stephan Holthoff-Pförtner from November 6, 2016 . After that, the office of President was vacant, as Stephan Holthoff-Pförtner resigned from his position on July 10, 2017 due to his appointment as Minister of State in the NRW state government. Rudolf Thiemann ( Liboriusblatt ) has been President since November 5, 2017 . Stephan Scherzer has been the managing director since 2012.

history

In 1929 the Reichsverband Deutscher Zeitschriften-Verleger e. V. founded. In 1949, the Association of German Magazine Publishers (VDZ) was founded as a merger of five regional associations. In 2000, the VDZ moved from the former federal capital of Bonn to the " House of the Press " in Berlin , where it now has its seat and place of jurisdiction.

In the course of the nomination of Stephan Holthoff-Pförtner (co-owner of the Funke media group ) for the office of VDZ President, there were discussions in the VDZ. In mid-November 2016, Gruner + Jahr , the Media Group Medweth , Spiegel-Verlag and Zeitverlag announced their membership in the VDZ's 'Fachverband Public Magazines'.

The aim is to represent and promote magazine publishers in the fulfillment of their economic, cultural and professional tasks. He represents the magazine publishers in public as well as towards the federal government, parliament and authorities as well as European institutions. He takes care of the training of the next generation in the magazine publishers, prepares legal opinions, provides information and is dedicated to maintaining international relations. As an employers' association , the VDZ conducts nationwide collective bargaining for editors on behalf of and on behalf of its regional associations and advises publishers on collective bargaining.

In 1993, the association founded its own advanced training facility, the VDZ magazine academy. Your job is to train the employees of all publishers affiliated with the association.

In 2008 the association established the Germany Integration Foundation . The foundation, based in Berlin, wants to promote “tolerance and exchange between people with different national, cultural and social backgrounds”.

Over 300 volunteer experts from member publishers work in working groups, committees and in training and further education. As a business association, the association participates at the German and European level in shaping the general economic conditions for magazine publishers. The VDZ ensures that the interests of magazine publishers are taken into account in laws and ordinances and that industry instruments, business standards and performance measurement procedures are developed in collaboration with market partners. The VDZ is politically committed to ancillary copyright law for press publishers . The association negotiates with Deutsche Post about appropriate products and prices for postal sales. He is also part of the group of shareholders of the press supply founded in 1949 , a supply facility for journalists and media professionals.
