The Association of Amateur Musicians and Associations of Austria (VAMÖ) is an Austrian association based in Vienna (ZVR 238491051). This umbrella organization was founded in 1924 to maintain and promote music-making with the accordion , guitar , dulcimer , mandolin , tambourica and zither .

history

After the First World War , some mandolin and zither clubs merged to form an umbrella organization. The first constituent meeting took place in 1924. In 1925 the association magazine “Die neue Volksmusik” appeared for the first time.

In 1925, the first association concert with 340 participants took place in the Great Concert Hall in Vienna under the direction of Friedenthal. The first association day took place in 1926. In 1928 the association orchestra, which had previously been founded, appeared on the radio for the first time with 44 musicians under the direction of Hans Ortmann.

In 1928 a "workers' music school" was founded and gave music lessons on all instruments as well as lessons in music theory. As a result, brass bands and amateur string orchestras also joined the association.

In 1929 the association was renamed the Central Association of Workers' Music Associations in Austria . In 1930 an office was created that made instruments and music available at low cost. In 1932 the name was changed again to the Association of Austrian Workers' Music Associations (VAMÖ). Since 1993 the short form VAMÖ means the Association of Amateur Musicians and Associations in Austria .

In the course of the February fights in 1934 , the social democratic labor movement was banned and all related organizations were dissolved. So does the VAMÖ. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the rebuilding of the association began.

In 1946 the “Federation of United Folk Music Associations” joined the VAMÖ. The federal monthly newspaper “Allgemeine Volksmusik-Zeitung” was taken over by VAMÖ and from August 1946 it was continued as “Die Volksmusik”. The 1st Association Day of the VAMÖ took place in November 1946 in the Old Town Hall in Vienna.

At that time 22 clubs (18 Viennese, three Lower Austrians and one Styrian) were members of the association. There were nine mandolin clubs, nine zither clubs, two brass bands, a tamburica club and a jazz group. It was possible to bring the radio concerts back to life. In 1947, 300 musicians performed in the arcade courtyard of the Vienna City Hall.

Also in 1947 a conducting course was set up and, due to the lack of pieces of music for mandolin and zither, a composition competition was launched. Five such competitions were held from 1948 to 1952.

In the next decades the orchestras took part in radio concerts with increasing frequency. The conducting courses were expanded. The VAMÖ concerts were set up in Vienna from 1958 and were expanded to include the federal states, annual participation in the opening of the Wiener Festwochen , and the organization of the association's magazine into a respected specialist journal with contributions from numerous authors such as Adolf Grünberger, Franz Knotzinger, Georg Kotek , Heinrich Pröll, Leopold Wech, Emil Wiessensteiner. In addition, the accordion was promoted as an instrument and contacts abroad were expanded.

Around 1981 the structure of the association changed. The seminar-like training prevailed and the VAMÖ accordion competition also showed a high level of musical quality.

In 2017, at the instigation of the association, the "Viennese mood and playing style of the zither" was included in the intangible cultural heritage .

activities

The specialist group for zither began in 1979 with the first zither seminar in Großrußbach . In 1982 the specialist group for mandolin and guitar followed in Feichtenbach . Both seminars are still offered today. The accordion competitions began in 1982 and have been held regularly since then. In addition, in 1980 the accordion specialist group organized the international accordion competition "World Trophy" of the CMA in Brunn am Gebirge .

The VAMÖ concerts that have been taking place since 1958 are part of the association's activities. To this day, clubs have come to play together. Since 1994, VAMÖ has organized the “Joy with Music” autumn festival together with Basis.Kultur.Wien every October. In addition to the VAMÖ orchestras, choirs, brass bands and symphony orchestras are also involved.
