The Medal of Merit for the Liberation of the City of Rome ( it. Medaglia ai Benemeriti della Liberazione di Roma ) was an award of the Kingdom of Italy , which was donated in 1870 by decree in three stages by King Victor Emanuell II . The bronze level was awarded to all Italian soldiers in the course of the Italian Wars of Independence . The silver level was awarded to 24 high-ranking personalities from the Risorgimento and Villa Glori, the gold level only twice.

Appearance and wearing style

The gold, silver or bronze medal with a diameter of 31.5 mm shows on its obverse in the center the coat of arms of Rome with the oblique inscription SPQR with the above wolf and two bundles of rods diagonally crossed behind it. Oak leaves are shown in the spaces in between. The lapel shows the four-line inscription ROMA / RIVENDICATA / AL SUOL / LIBERATORE (Rome claims the ground through its liberators) within two crossed oak leaves that unite at their upper end in a five-pointed star . The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on the red ribbon, which was interwoven with five yellow vertical stripes. The color symbolism stands for the city colors of Rome. The medal could also be awarded with clasps in the form of bundles of laurel rods with the dates 1848 , 1849 , 1867 and 1870 .
