The Association for Low German Language Research (VndS) is a language association founded on September 25, 1874 in Hamburg with the aim of scientific research into Low German language and literature. To discuss new issues and studies, the association is in contact with members and interested linguists not only in the northern German-speaking area, but also in Europe and overseas. The maintenance of the Low or Low German dialects itself is not the subject of the association's work, but the scientific processing of practical language issues is very much.

history

The VndS was founded in 1874 by members of the Germanic-literary section of the Association for Art and Science . The first constituent annual meeting took place on May 20, 1875 in the Patriotic Building in Hamburg. The first chairman was the city librarian August Lübben from Oldenburg until 1884 .

The research into Low German also in its historical references coincided in many points with the goals of the Hanseatic History Association . Because of this and because of numerous double memberships, a close scientific cooperation developed. In the years 1874–2007, the two “sister societies” organized joint Whitsun conferences in the entire northern European language area and in the cities of the former Hanseatic League.

At the beginning of the National Socialist era, Agathe Lasch , a Jewish board member, the Low German philologist and first professor at the University of Hamburg, felt compelled to resign from her position on the board in March 1933 . From 1935 the Association for Low German Language Research was brought into line.

After 1945, no more meetings could take place in East German cities, with the exception of an annual meeting in Rostock in 1958. Scientific contact with association members in the GDR was also not possible from 1970 to 1990.

Club activity

The main goal of the association's work is the publication of linguistic periodicals.

Since the foundation of the association in 1875, an editorial committee has published the yearbook of the association for Low German language research , since 1904 as a specialist journal under the title Low German yearbook . The correspondence sheet of the Association for Low German Language Research has been published since 1876 with smaller articles, conference reports, association information and popular articles.

The Low German Bibliography has been providing information about current publications in the field of Low German linguistics and literature since 1970 . The association publishes linguistic monographs and printed works in its series of monuments , prints , research and dictionaries at irregular intervals .

All VndS publications have been published by Wachholtz Verlag Kiel (formerly Neumünster) since 1930 . The "Korrespondenzblatt des Verein für Niederdeutsche Sprachforschung" (Nd. Kbl.) Has been published by the Husum Printing and Publishing Company in Husum since 2019. The "Yearbook of the Association for Low German Language Research" (Nd. Jb.) Continues to be published by Wachholtz Verlag (Kiel / Hamburg).

Another focus is the scientific exchange in the annual conferences, which take place in the week after Whitsun in a Hanseatic city or city in the Low German-speaking area with changing focuses.

For some years now, young academics have been able to put their projects on Low German research topics up for discussion in colloquia lasting several days.
