Association of Westphalian Museums

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of Westphalian Museums eV (VWM) is an association based in the city of Münster , in which some (approx. 100) Westphalian museums have come together.

history

The association came into being when, on May 11, 1926, at the invitation of Max Geisberg (1875–1943), director of the State Museum for the Province of Westphalia , museum directors from Westphalia met in Münster and formed a working group with initially 19 members, which they called “Association Westphalian museums ”.

According to the statutes, the aim was to provide advice on matters relating to local museums , to get in touch with their managers, to evaluate the holdings and to define the tasks of collecting. Practical advice to the museum was provided by the State Museum, initially in particular by the assistants Fritz Rudolf Uebe and Robert Nissen . The conferences that have been held once or twice a year in Münster and all parts of Westphalia since 1926 have been important for collegial contact and exchange. Traveling exhibitions on art and cultural history topics have also been organized since 1928. A Westphalian Museum Guide was published for the first time in 1935, and more followed in 1955 and 1971.

From 1926 to 1978, the Association of Westphalian Museums, first for the Provincial Association of Westphalia, then for the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe, carried out regional museum maintenance tasks. It was a sought-after partner in the promotion, redesign, founding and project development of museums until the LWL set up its own museum office for these tasks in 1978. Since then, the directors of the State Museum are no longer "born" chairmen , but are elected according to a new statute.
