Verena Chapel

The Verenakapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in Aettenschwil , a village belonging to the municipality of Sins in the canton of Aargau . It is located a little higher on the Bühl and is a listed building.

The first mention of the village of Aettenschwil and a chapel ("ecclesia Agetiswilare") erroneously referred to as a church, both of which were owned by the Muri monastery, took place in 1179 . Ten years later, Pope Alexander III confirmed . this possession. This chapel was a manorial foundation within the already existing parish of Sins (membership has been proven since 1370). The building that exists today was built in 1574/75. In connection with the abolition of the monastery, the chapel came into the possession of the canton in 1841, which ceded it to the Aettenschwil Justice Association in 1907. Renovations took place in 1931 and 1980/81.

The simply designed, east-facing structure has a gable roof on which a shingled eight-sided roof turret with a helmet rises. The canopy resting on Tuscan columns protects the Gothic -looking, pointed arched portal; At the top of the head there is a coat of arms of Abbot Hieronymus Frey . A pressed arch separates the nave and the choir . The dark stained altar is gilded sparingly. It is flanked by figures of Saints Martin of Tours and Benedict of Nursia . The altarpiece, painted by Josef Anton Mesmer in 1796, shows Saint Verena , above is a coat of arms of Prince Abbot Gerold Meyer .
