Josef Anton Mesmer (also Messmer * 28 May 1747 in Hohentengen , † 28 January 1827 in Saulgau ) was a church painter of the Baroque in Upper Swabia and Switzerland .

life and work

Mesmer came as the fourth child of the painter Johann Georg Mesmer from Saulgau, well-known in Upper Swabia, and his wife Theresia, née. Rueschin (born October 3, 1717 - † October 4, 1808). From this marriage there were six sons and five daughters.

He first learned from his father and then studied from 1765 to 1770 at the Art Academy in Vienna . His study trips took him to Italy, among other places. Many of the red chalk drawings that have been preserved bear witness to this time.

As a church painter, Mesmer created frescoes , ways of the cross and altar leaves in Catholic churches in Upper Swabia and Switzerland.
