Parish Church of St. Josef (Bettwil)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parish church of St. Josef is the Roman Catholic parish church of Bettwil in the canton of Aargau . The late Baroque building was built at the end of the 18th century and, together with the rectory and barn, forms an intact assembly.

history

Bettwil owned a chapel since 1496, which was dedicated to Saint Otmar . It was enlarged in 1717 and rebuilt in 1729. Bettwil remained part of the Sarmenstorf parish until 1799, when it became independent. In view of the imminent split, the chapel was demolished and replaced by the current church in 1788/89. The work was under the direction of the master builder Franz Joseph Rey from Muri , some of the building material came from the old chapel.

The completion of the interior design took until 1805, the inauguration took place on August 12, 1808 in honor of the new church patron Joseph of Nazareth . Franz Josef Bossard from Cham built the first organ in 1832 ( restored by Orgelbau Kuhn in 1882, replaced in 1930 by an instrument from Metzler Orgelbau ). A complete restoration was carried out from 1971 to 1974, which also included the relocation of the organ gallery. The roof was renovated in 1981, the roof turret in 1999 and 2008.

Structure and equipment

The east-facing , simple hall church consists of a rectangular nave and a recessed, flat beveled and elongated choir . On both sides there are three arched windows on the nave and two on the choir. At the eastern end of the continuous roof ridge rises the hood-shaped roof turret with three bells. The portal is carefully profiled in the Louis-Seize style and is protected by a sign supported by composite columns .

Stucco work with rocaille garland and fir patterns adorn the ceiling of the ship. On the west wall there is an oval pulpit with a beaded base and grisaille pictures on the parapet. In the corners of the nave there are two side altars diagonally to the floor plan, and the high altar in the choir. The ceiling painting of the choir comes from Josef Anton Mesmer , the stucco work there is attributed to Peter Anton Moosbrugger .

Surroundings

To the west of the church is the rectory, built in 1764, which initially served as a chaplaincy and school house. The building with 3 × 3 axes has a gable roof with crooked hips and adhesive roofs . The corridors and the stairwell are decorated with Rococo paintings. In the attic hall there is a ceiling painting of St. Otmar with a stucco frame from 1767.

The parish barn north-west of the church dates from 1760 and was extensively restored in 1977. The timber frame structure has a half-hipped roof, gable panels paneled with boards and an adhesive roof on both ends.
