Hieronymus Frey
Hieronymus I. Frey (* approx. 1535 in Diessenhofen ; † August 4, 1585 in Muri ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1564 until his death he was abbot of the Muri monastery in the free offices (in today's canton of Aargau ).
The son of Diessenhofen councilor Bernhard Frey came in 1551 in the convent school one of Muri and laid two years later the profession from. In 1557 Frey took over the office of pastor of Boswil , a collature of the monastery. In 1564 he was elected abbot. He was responsible for the implementation of the reforms decided at the Council of Trent , but in some cases he encountered fierce opposition in the Convention, in particular with regard to the abolition of the beneficiary economy. For this reason, Frey devoted himself increasingly to the economic development of the monastery by adjusting goods and income and re-creating land registers and fief books. He also wrote new statutes for the nuns of the Hermetschwil monastery and had the monastery library expanded. According to a report by the chronicler Augustin Stöcklin, he died of a lightning strike in the monastery church .
