Jakob Meier (* 1548 in Lucerne ; † November 12, 1599 in Vomp , Tyrol ; also called Jacobus Meyer ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1585 to 1596 he was abbot of the Muri monastery in the free offices (in today's canton of Aargau ).

biography

Meier, who came from a respected Lucerne family, entered the Muri monastery in 1563. Eight years later he was ordained a priest . From 1575 to 1578 he worked as a pastor in the parish of Bünzen , a collation of the monastery. Against the opposition of several members of the convention, above all Johann Jodok Singisen , he was elected abbot in 1585.

After taking office, the complaints against Meier increased. He had a concubine and had a house built for her and her daughter. By mismanagement he led the monastery to the brink of ruin. Because of these incidents, the nuncio summoned him to Lucerne and placed him temporarily under house arrest. Meier was accused of leading a worldly lifestyle; in addition, he is a drinker and a con man. When questioned by the bailiff of Lucerne in January 1594, he admitted some allegations while denying others.

Although Meier received a warning, there was no improvement in behavior. With the permission of the nuncio, he was arrested on June 19, 1596. The investigation that followed led to other charges, including violent behavior. Abbot Peter Schmid from Wettingen Monastery and representatives of the seven federal umbrella locations met in Muri on August 1, 1596 and forced Meier to resign; his second concubine was arrested. Meier was first transferred to the Ittingen Charterhouse , later he retired to the St. Georgenberg Monastery near Vomp in Tyrol .
