from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christoph vom Grüth († September 23, 1564 in Muri ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk . From 1549 until his death he was abbot of the Muri monastery in the free offices (in today's canton of Aargau ).

He was the son of Joachim von Grüth, the schoolmaster of Rapperswil . In 1532 he entered the monastery school of Muri. He made his profession three years later . Johann Christoph vom Grüth was elected abbot in 1549. He had the cloister of the monastery decorated with glass paintings. In 1562 he sent a delegate to the Council of Trent , but was no longer able to push through the Tridentine reforms (in particular the abolition of the benefice economy ). In May 1564 he dismissed the monastery clerk because he was a supporter of the Reformation. His sister Meliora vom Grüth (allegedly a godchild of the reformer Huldrych Zwingli ) was master of the Hermetschwil monastery from 1553 , which was subordinate to the Muri monastery. Another sister named Sophia officiated as abbess in the Tänikon monastery .
