Vermilion is a small town ( English Town ) in central Alberta ( Canada ).
geography
Vermilion is located about 175 kilometers southeast of Edmonton , the capital of Alberta, and 55 kilometers west of Lloydminster . The connecting roads Alberta Highway 16 ( Yellowhead Highway ) and Alberta Highway 41 intersect in the center of Vermilion. The Vermilion River flows on the northern edge .
history
The name Vermilion referred to in English from ground parlance Cinnabarit color vermilion made. This mineral is often found in the river bed and on the banks of the Vermilion River and gives these parts of the landscape a reddish color. The river and place were therefore given the names Vermilion River and Vermilion , based on this dye . The first settlers settled in the area in 1902. After the connection to a railway line in 1905, the population continued to grow. Vermilion was given Village status in 1906 and town status a little later in the same year . A brick- making factory was the main employer until 1914. A devastating fire destroyed a large part of the residential and commercial buildings in 1918. With the discovery of petroleum in the vicinity, a new period of prosperity began in connection with the production of this product in 1937. After the Second World War , oil production declined because other sites had more favorable production conditions. Today agriculture and tourism are the main livelihoods of the residents.
