Church of Reconciliation

The Reconciliation Church is a Protestant church in the Rheinau district of Mannheim . It was built between 1963 and 1965 according to plans by Helmut Striffler .

history

Rheinau is a young settlement in the former Seckenheim district, which was only built in the third third of the 19th century. Ecclesiastically, the Protestant residents belonged to Seckenheim, but were looked after from Oftersheim because of the better transport connections . In 1904 an emergency church was built, which had been used by the Schwetzingerstadt community until the Friedenskirche was built. The small church with a turret, originally intended as a temporary solution, was then to exist for several decades. In 1904 a vicariate was established and in 1908 Rheinau became an independent parish.

Two of the three bells from the Andreas Hamm foundry had to be delivered during the First World War . In 1925, the new four-bell chime, cast by the Bachert bell foundry , was inaugurated. The church remained undamaged during World War II . Big changes in the community took place in the 1950s and 1960s. Until then, Hochstätt, Pfingstberg, Rheinau-Süd and parts of Casterfeld had also belonged to the district. Now Pfingstberg received its own parish and a vicariate was set up in Rheinau-Süd. And from 1953, the church, previously known as the “Evangelical Church” or “Rheinau Church”, was called “Michaelskirche” according to a resolution by the parish council.

Due to the poor state of construction of the church and the size of the congregation, a new church was urgently built. In 1958, an enlargement of the church, originally intended only as a temporary solution, was discussed. But then the Mannheim architect Helmut Striffler was commissioned to plan a new church. The foundation stone was laid in 1963. In the following year the topping-out ceremony could be celebrated and the new bells inaugurated and on March 28, 1965 the church, now named "Reconciliation Church", was inaugurated by the regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Baden Hans Heidland .
