Versatile is an agricultural technology brand of the Canadian company Buhler Industries Inc. The brand is best known for high-performance tractors with articulated steering . In the meantime, standard tractors, self-propelled sprayers , combine harvesters and attachments for soil cultivation are also sold under the Versatile brand.

history

In 1947 Peter Pakosh and Roy Robinson founded the Hydraulic Engineering Company in Toronto , which manufactured field sprayers. In 1950 the company moved to Winnipeg and a harrow was developed first. Other tillage implements, windrowers and combine harvesters followed . In 1963 the company was renamed Versatile Manufacturing .

The first Versatile tractors were manufactured in 1966. Versatile was the first manufacturer to start with the assembly line production of articulated tractors, at the beginning all tractors were equipped with all-wheel drive . In 1972 a new logo was introduced. Between 1976 and 1977 attempts were made to build a particularly powerful tractor. The Versatile 1080, which is usually referred to as Big Roy, was born from this project. Due to technical problems and a lack of suitable attachments, it ultimately remained a one-off.

In 1977 the company was sold to Cornat Industries, and the first road-rail tractor was introduced in the same year. From 1979 to 1983 Versatile tractors were offered in Europe under the Fiat brand . In 1980 the logo was changed again. On July 10, 1987 Versatile was sold to Ford New Holland . From 1989 the tractors produced by Versatile were sold under the Ford brand with the corresponding color scheme, Versatile was retained as a name affix to most of the tractors produced. In 1991 a majority stake in Ford New Holland including the Versatile brand was bought by Fiat Geotech . In January 1993, Ford withdrew completely from New Holland, and the Versatile tractors were then sold under the New Holland brand. From 1993, standard tractors were manufactured in the Versatile factory with the Genesis series.

In 1999, New Holland merged with Case Corporation to become CNH Global . In the following year, the Versatile brand was sold to Buhler Industries for anti-trust reasons . Subsequently, the distribution of the Genesis series was gradually taken over, while the road-rail tractors continued to be produced in Winnipeg, but were only sold by New Holland. The Versatile tractors were marketed under the New Holland brand until 2000, and the Buhler Versatile brand name was used for the articulated tractors from 2001 . A black-red-white color scheme was used.

In 2007 Rostselmasch took over 80 percent of Buhler Industries. Since 2008 the tractors have been marketed under the Versatile brand again. From 2009 onwards, Versatile articulated tractors were also assembled in Russia . Articulated tractors are now being manufactured in Russia under the Rostselmasch brand, but these are based on Versatile tractors. In 2010, a factory for self-propelled sprayer in was Willmar (Minnesota) in the US state of Minnesota adopted since self-propelled sprayer sold under the brand Versatile. In 2011, Buhler Industries took over Ezee-On Manufacturing, a manufacturer of tillage equipment, and the products are now also offered under the Versatile brand. In 2012 combine harvesters were introduced based on Rostselmasch models. In 2013, articulated tractors with crawler tracks were presented. In 2017 the black-red-yellow color scheme was reintroduced. In 2019 Buhler Industries entered into a cooperation with Kubota , meanwhile the Versatile Nemesis series is also offered by Kubota as the M8 series .
