The Monte Spalavera (also La Spalavera for short ) is a 1534  m slm high mountain in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Italian region of Piedmont . The highest point is marked by a summit cross.

A notice board on the summit gives an overview of the surrounding mountains. The view extends to Monte Leone and Helsenhorn , Monte Tamaro , Gridone and Pizzo Ruscada, among others . You also have a good view of Lake Maggiore near Luino and Locarno, as well as the lower part of the lake and the surrounding valleys of Val Cannobina , Valle Intrasca and Valle Veddasca .

geography

The Monte Spalavera belongs to the Zeda-Laurasca group within the Ticino Alps . It lies above Lake Maggiore and is bordered by the Val Cannobina in the north, the Valle Intrasca in the southwest and the valley of the Rio di Cannero in the southeast. The mountain is mostly forested, on the southern slope and on the summit there are alpine meadows. The west and south-west slopes are in the Val Grande National Park , and the municipal boundary between Aurano and Trarego Viggiona runs over Monte Spalavera .

The mountain is rich in springs, the Rio Socragio , a tributary of the Cannobino , rises on the north slope, the Rio di Cannero , which flows into Lake Maggiore , on the south-east slope , and the tributaries Rio Scarnasca and Val Gula des San Giovanni on the south-west and north-west slopes .

Ascent

The summit can be reached from Alpe Colle (also called Il Colle ) on foot or by mountain bike. An old military road leads in some serpentines initially through birch forest, then over an alp to the southern slope of the mountain, where it turns into a path. Shortly afterwards this crosses with a steeper hiking trail that comes from the Alpe Colle without any major detours . Another former military road leads from the Alp along the southern and western slopes via Passo Folungo to the Rifugio Pian Vadà directly below Monte Vadà .

The narrow Strada provinciale 92 , which meanders up the mountain at Cannero Riviera and leads to Verbania , leads to Alpe Colle with a large car park and war memorial .

history

Trench on Monte Spalavera

The mountain is part of the Linea Cadorna , a line of defense that was built between 1899 and 1918 and was in use until 1945. It was supposed to secure the Po valley against attacks from Swiss territory. Trenches and other fortifications were built on the mountain, which are still preserved today.

For centuries, Monte Spalavera was the scene of a bitter struggle between the municipalities of Trarego (today Trarego Viggiona ), Aurano , Oggebbio and Cannero (today Cannero Riviera ) over forest and pastureland. Today the four communities share the Alpe Colle and meet there at one point.
