Club name
Despite its short existence, the club has already gone through a number of name changes. It is noteworthy that, in contrast to the usual use of katakana for word creations or adaptations of foreign words, until 2013, apart from the name of the prefecture added in 2010, Latin letters were used throughout:
- 2003-2004 HOYO FC
- 2005–2009 HOYO Atletico ELAN
- 2010 HOYO Atletico ELAN Ōita ( HOYO Atletico ELAN 大分 )
- 2011–2012 HOYO AC ELAN Ōita ( HOYO AC ELAN 大分 )
- 2013 HOYO Ōita ( HOYO 大分 )
In 2014, with the aim of seeking extraordinary J. League membership, the company name was replaced by a two-word Portmanteau . Merging the Portuguese “vermelho” (red, referring to the main color of the team) and the English “spa” (source, based on the multitude of hot springs in nearby Beppu ) resulted in “Verspah” ( ヴ ェ ル ス パ Verusupa ). The appended "h" is a reminder of the old team name HOYO.
